Top Honours for Donald

The work of one of Huddersfield's sports most popular characters was recognised when both the Football Association and the Huddersfield RCD Junior League made special presentations on Tuesday 7th October.

Donald Wood, well known across Huddersfield for his work with Laund Hill YMCA, was presented with the Football Association's 50 year medal by the West Riding County FA's Chief Executive and representative on the FA Council, Mr. Roy Carter, for his outstanding contribution to local football.

In addition, Mr. Wood was also elected a Life Member of the Huddersfield RCD Junior League in recognition of his 21 years service to the League.

Donald joined Milnsbridge YMCA in September 1945 to play football in the Red Triangle League.  In 1949 he helped to form Milnsbridge YMCA senior FC and continued as a Committee member until 1959 when he took over as Secretary.  He also took over as Junior Secretary in 1960.

In 1983, the Milnsbridge YMCA merged with Huddersfield YMCA to become Laund Hill YMCA and Donald became Secretary.

Upon his retirement as Secretary in 2003, Donald was elected Chairman and is now President of the club.  Donald still represents the club at both Huddersfield Junior and Senior League meetings.

It was also noted that during a similar period of time, Donald has also been a staunch supporter of local senior and Junior cricket.
